Yoga

Yoga Fergus OntarioIs an ancient science originating in India some 5,000 years ago.  The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj or yoke. This refers to the union of our individual selves with our universal Self.  By giving deep attention to our bodies, our breath, the activity of our minds and the fullness of this moment we begin a journey back to the comfort of our essential nature.  Hatha Yoga (Ha - sun, Tha - moon) moves us towards this self-realization through Asana (postures). Pranayama (breathing) and Dharana (focused attention).  Gently open your body to new movement and flow of breath as you relax into postures that improve flexibility and release stress.

RiverSound Retreat is open! We have built a beautiful sacred space for yoga, meditation and rentals on the Fergus Grand River.

Class Descriptions:

gentle yoga:  This class is a safe and gentle path to reducing stress, increasing vitality and deepening relaxation.  Perfect for beginners or those with injuries or limited mobility.  We will be using chairs, straps, and blocks to support our postures.  Yoga postures and breathing exercises improve mobility, circulation, strength and digestive health.

intermediate yoga:  This class is for students that have taken Yoga Fundamentals with me (please inquire if you are unsure about your suitability for this class).  The Spring Session will be focused on learning several flow series for use in your home practice.  We will also be examing the meaning and relevance of the Yamas (moral principals) - the first limb of yoga.

mindfulness meditation drop-in:  Begin your day with the practice of Mindfulness.  The session begins with readings or recorded talks before supporting each other in shared silent sitting practice.

private yoga:  These one to one sessions are helpful for updating your home practice, addressing specific ailments or health concerns or beginning students that are unsure if they are ready to join a class.  These sessions are available at our equipped  riverside studio on the scenic Grand River or at your home.  I am also able to record our session as an mp3 so that you can play it at home on your stereo, computer or ipod.

*restorative yoga:  This is a two hour class that utilizes lots of props (bolsters, blankets, blocks, chairs) to support the body in postures that are held for up to 10 minutes.  The typical Fight or Flight stress reponse is countered with the Rest and Relaxation response.

shared practice drop-in:  Enjoy your own practice in the sacred space of RiverSound Retreat.  Jill is available for questions and suggestions.  Share in the support and inspiration of inquiry and shared practice.

yin/yang yoga:  A balanced practice of active and passive asana designed to develop and maintain a strong and supple body, affecting the muscles, joints and fascia.  "Yin yoga is a meditative physical practice that stimulates the balancing of the energetic pathways (meridians) through holding floor poses while Yang Yoga involves a slow alignment based movement practice." (Sarah Powers)

yoga fundamentals: This course is designed for beginners and more experienced students who wish to explore their mind/body dialogue.  Through a nurturing, playful and meditative style, you will improve you awareness, balance, strength and flexibility.  Relaxation and breathing techniques will leave you feeling relaxed and renewed.

yoga & meditation:  Short periods of standing, walking and sitting meditation are interspersed with gentle asana and focusing pranayama practices.
